Our Mission
To operate as sustainably as possible, we run on solar power, minimise the use of plastic, serve vegan & vegetarian food, plant trees every winter, and keep bees to enhance pollination.
How we define the minimum NUMBER of trees we plant
We define the minimum number of trees we plant each year based on the average emissions of our guests. See details below.
To calculate the CO2 emitted by our guests we use the following Greenhouse Gas Reporting Conversion Factors.
We have laid out how we calculate the carbon emitted by our guests.
Air Travel: 0.15 kg CO2 e / km per person with an average return flight distance of 5,600 km.
Land Travel: 0.16 kg CO2 e / km per person with an average travel distance of 100 km per stay.
Water: 0.15 kg CO2 e / m3 per person with an average consumption of 0.145 m3 (145 L) per day.
Food: 0.15 kg CO2 e / kg per person with an average consumption of 1.5 kg of food per day.
Electricity: 0.21 kg CO2 e / kWh per person with an average consumption of 5 kWh per stay (contingency if our solar panels are not enough on cloudy days and at night).
Based on the above, on average, 2 people for a stay of 7 days emit 900 kg of CO2 for their holiday at Masseria Specula
We purchase and plant saplings which grow on average approximately to 300kg in 30 years.
Approximately 50% of the weight of the trees we plant is carbon.
For each Kg of carbon sequestered, 3.667 Kg of CO2 are removed from the atmosphere.
For each tree we plant, assuming a tree lifetime of 30 years, we remove 50% x 300kg tree x 3.667 Kg CO2 = 550kg of CO2
